WFP Photography Awards 2009



The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Bangladesh is pleased to announce the launching of an annual award for excellence in food security-related photography in Bangladesh.

Objective

The objective of the award is to encourage photographers to raise national awareness and understanding of food security and how it impacts on the most vulnerable sectors of society, especially poor women and children. The award is expected to encourage photographers to acquire a more in-depth understanding and appreciation of food security in Bangladesh.

Content

The award is designed to encourage photographers to capture the activity and individual human identity of food security in Bangladesh, especially the vulnerability of the ultra-poor population or images that relate to the following areas:

1) Women and children suffering from food insecurity.
2)Young children and expectant and nursing mothers – their struggle and the obstacles they overcome to meet their special nutritional and nutrition-related health needs.
3) Poor households, especially female members – their struggle to rise above the situation through education and training and livelihood development.
4) Effects of natural disasters and the value of disaster preparedness in areas prone to recurring floods and cyclones and the effects of climate change.

Conditions for Entry:
1. Entries must be submitted to WFP along with two passport-size photos of the photographers.
2. A maximum of four photographs may be entered from any one individual or institution.
3. Best 50 selected photographs will be exhibited in Dhaka through a weeklong photo exhibition.
4. All winners will receive certificates, crests and cash prizes. 5. Four additional entries will receive honorable mention awards and certificates.
6. All selected photographs will become the property of World Food Programme and the organizers will gain rights over any form of usage; credit lines will be provided on any form of usage.
7. Only digital pictures (taken within the last 24 months from the submission of deadline) will be accepted in CD format, the minimum acceptable resolution is 1500 pixels. Once the preliminary selection is finalized, the participants shall print out the chosen photographs (12” X 18” 3 copy each) and re-submit.
8. The organizers have the right to disqualify any entry without any prior notification due to non-adherence to technical guidelines, or unacceptable nature of the content of the images. No submission can be returned to the participant.
9. Selected photographs (maximum 50) will be featured in a special photo book, published by WFP to raise funds for its school feeding programme.
10. The top three winners of the photography competition will have an opportunity to observe WFP operations in Bangladesh as guest Photographer.

The awards will be announced on World Food Day in October 2009

The whole scheme will be organized and managed jointly with SW Multimedia Ltd.

How to Submit

Entries must be submitted in writing and addressed to The Representative, WFP Bangladesh, IDB Bhaban, E/8-A, Rokeya Sharani, Agargaon, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka 1207. No entry fee is required.

Deadline for entry is 31st August 2009. A panel of judges comprising distinguished personalities with a strong track record will judge the entries. Decisions of the panel will be treated as final. Panel of Judges

A Panel of Judges will assess and produce a score on each item. The main function of the panel is to evaluate applications and recommend winners to WFP. The judges will operate independently and report only to the WFP Representative, Bangladesh.
