Background |
WFP's Jalalabad area office opened in 1991, when the Kabul communist
government was still in power
Covering a region with a population of approximately 2.8 million,
most of whom earn their livelihood from agriculture and livestock
production, the office has a warehouse capacity of approximately
5,000 metric tonnes.
All three provinces covered by the WFP Jalalabad area office
- Nangarhar, Lagman and Kunar - have been adversely affected by
the recent conflict
Bombing raids still continue in the area around the Tora Bora
complex
In addition to the fighting, three consecutive years of drought
has reduced crop production to less than 30% of the normal year's
production
Jalalabad area-office currently employs 49 staff, including
3 international staff workers. This includes two national & one
international female staff
In September-December 2001, most WFP staff were evacuated or
left Jalalabad. Five national staff members were present during
this period when communications equipment was stolen and the warehouse
was looted of 25 bags (1,250 tonnes) of cereals.
